Unless you have been living under a rock you would know that TikTok is one of the most popular (new) social media apps of the past year. Even though it’s not yet on Instagram’s level, the little prince can always learn from the king … or is it the other way around? Let’s talk.
Any time a new tool or application comes out in media, you can bet that platforms will seek to copy it. Why? To stay in the game of course. But we can all agree that copying from each other is a way to maximize their own potential. Instagram is no stranger to stealing/copying/being responsible of an app dying or ‘borrowing’ key features from other platforms. Look at how Snapchat basically died thanks to Instagram. Rest in peace my friend (we only cared about the filters to be fair). Does anyone even remember a time when there were no stories on Instagram? We don’t either. Instagram is at the top of its game right now and isn’t ready to give up its throne (yet?).
Jane Won, a technology and media blogger, posted a tweet (link to tweet below) where she wrote about the rumor that Instagram is trying to come for TikTok’s key feature. If you don’t know how TikTok works: it’s a platform where you can create short videos and put music over it, as simply as that. The blogger claims that Instagram is working on implementing a ‘new’ feature in the app called ‘Clips’. This little tool will let you edit video in a stop motion kind of way, familiar (or actually the same as TikTok). Does it ring a bell? It sure does to us.
Instagram is working on “Clips”, a Story Camera feature “inspired” by TikTok

As such, it’s no surprise to see that Instagram is looking to copy TikTok, or any other new application or tool in media. It may come off as a little cheap to do this act, but it clearly works. What are your thoughts about it? Do you think it’s cool for Instagram to use TikTok’s key feature?
So, who gets the crown?
